Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I found this medal while metal detecting around a building built in 1890 on the west coast of Florida. It appears to be a military medal and says gold filled on the back. There is a pin on the back with a latch. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Howie - welcome to TreaureNet!

Can you please also post a clear picture of the back? It will help to see the type of pin, and the stamped words, to help date it.

Initially, it looks like a patriotic broach, but the O & S on the top may make it military. Nice piece!

The letters are C S on the medal or pin. I found one that a fine arts dealer auctioned off in St Pete in 2009 and have emailed them to see if they remember any details. Thanks

Pin...and definately looks more like an "O" than a "C" to me! Looks like a security firms pin IMO.

Here is a link I found showing a picture of the same pin sold at an auction http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/antique-solid-gold-cs-military-eagle-93793450

I have contacted the folks that auctioned and sold the pin in 2009 to see if they rember any details.
Looks like CS

We need to see the back and something for size. It appears there are some markings.

Here is what I found out from the folks that auctioned off a simular pin in 2009;

Confederate States Military pin, we would have to see in person to make you an offer. Circa 1860

This is interesting and I wonder what CannonBallGuy or CC Hunter has to say.

We really need to see a picture of the back Howie before we can even begin to make any determination. I hope you understand. We can also date it by the GF markings and also by the latch and hinge but you are not giving us enough to work with. Do you have the T bar type hinge?

As far as I know a CW era hinge would look like this.

Not trying to be a party pooper BUT!! if you look at the pin that was sold and the one that was found they are two different pieces, The breast of the eagle is different, the feet are different, I don't think they are the same.
even the wings are different.

At the request of BigCypressHunter, I'm going to post about these 1/2-inch "eagle with CS" pins.

In my nearly 40 years of examining Confederate insignia made of metal, I have never seen one marked "Gold Filled" or "10K" (nor any other Karat marking).

Furthermore, I have never seen any Confederate insignia showing that particular design of eagle. It looks like a German/Prussian/Austrian-style eagle.

Therefore, in my opinion, especially in view of the 10K/Gold-Filled marking, the idea that these pins are Confederate is nothing more than wishful thinking.

Thanks CannonballGuy. :icon_thumright: I didnt like leaving this open ended and Howie had stopped participating. Maybe he didnt want to hear the truth. :dontknow:

He probably rushed off to Old Northeast Jewelers in St. Pete http://oldnortheastjewelers.com/

...and I dont blame him lol.

Who is redfish? I smell a fish. I was watching this thread and I didnt like the direction it was heading. Thats why I asked CBG for his assistance. I hope its nothing more than wishful thinking by Howie but either way we deserve an update and a pic of the backside.

Thanks for posting the pics side by side. You are correct in that there are some differences but it could be just different manufacturers. I dont know what it is but they are probably both 20th century. The original may even be OS for all we know at this point.

Does anybody know what it sold for? Is this the same Hess Fine Art/ OLd Northeast Jewelers in St Pete? Why is there just one picture (no backside) of a so called Confederate item? http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/antique-solid-gold-cs-military-eagle-93793450
