While out in the woods here in Southwest Missouri I came across these piles of rocks under ledges upon further inspection they seem to be holding up the ledge rock above and even the smaller stones are in place very tight, and do not appear to be the same kind of rock. Does anyone know what they are or how they were made? IMG_20171217_072917.jpg

Lime stone. Lime stone is a sedimentary mineral forming in layers with some being harder than others. As the rock errodes, primarily by water and acids in the soils, one will observe what your picturing here at the edges of the shelves. I've seen a lot of that formation in Missouri as well as other states in hillsides and along water ways. Almost looks man made but its natural.
