Hi there, I'm hoping that somebody can help identify this hammered silver coin, I know that the coin is Edward, but I cannot narrow it down to the exact coin.

Secondly I am hoping that somebody will recognize the artifact shown. My Dad, Grandad and myself are very interested to know :)

They were both found by myself, metal detecting in the UK. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to TreasureNet...the coin looks to be a Edward1st penny Civitas London, we need better picture for the artefact.:hello:

Looks more like a Canterbury mint otherwise what SS said.

The other piece is a horse brass (leather decor) probably the blinker no older than 18th C.

Hello skylight,

Welcome to TNet & thanks for showing us your finds.

Just to show you I was paying some attention, I believe another of our British members just unearthed a similar hammered coin: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/385594-return-roman-saxon-site.html, and he described it as, "Hammered crockard of Gui of Collemede (1296 - 1306), Bishop of Cambrai, in France! Rated as scarce…"

Me, I was struck by the resemblance to Harpo Marx.

PS: Nevermind, It's clear I mistook what I was viewing…

Other than being a long cross, there are no other comparisons.

Sorry, CRUSADER,

My apologies for misidentifying & invoking your name and that of the good Bishop. I'm gonna go sit in the corner for a while…

Thanks for your help, you guys are great :)

My Dad and I go detecting all the time, and we find quite a lot of artifacts, he's pretty good at identifying most things (along with my Grandad of course). Anyway, if people are happy to look at these things, I'll be sure to upload them here. :-)

I'm sorry there wasn't much of a back story to the coin, my Dad also unearthed a silver hammered Elizabeth Silver six pence in the same session, but it was in pretty poor condition.

In short, I was metal detecting in the middle of a ploughed field with a Fisher 75, got a steady two way signal, dug around 6" and used a pin pointer to locate the coin.
My Dads Elizabeth coin was funny because it happened to be his very first signal, within the first 20 seconds of detecting!
We have competitions, with a point scoring system, coins/ artifacts =1, silver =2, gold =3, so he was soon in the lead.
Fortunately about an hour and a half of detecting later, I had found this little coin, the horse artifact (1 point) and another worn coin (1 point) which made for a very marginal win for myself in the end!

Through looking at other posts, I feel it would be correct in saying that my coin is quite common? (as people would probably be screaming 'banner find!' etc)
Thanks again : )

London is the most common Ed I, & Ed I is one of the most common hammered (along with Lizzy I), but yours is a Canterbury which is slightly less common.
