In the Mediterranean on a yacht.

2 x Excalibur ll, Excal 1000,
Found in the water. 16 mm or 5/8" in diameter, its heavy for its size and to me looks to be lead. I did not find it in one piece, but there was originally a hinge pin holding the two together. There could have been a spring between the two legs to keep it closed. I know there are some talented folks on here that will be able to ID it.

Looks like a fishing weight mold, but if so, it wouldn't be made out of lead.

Definitely not a mold for lead balls. Or fishing weights (no way to fill it). That and it would melt. Wouldn't be much as a power measure as the lips would trap too much.

I don't know much about Mediterranean cooking: is there any dish that calls for small, compressed balls of meat or dough/bean paste & fried or wrapped in a pasta or pastry shell?

I am almost certain it is made of lead it marks easily with a trimming knife, so not a sinker mould as charlie p and creskol point out. The balls that could be moulded from it are 11mm in diameter so quite small. It is well made, I poured some water into the hole where the hinges are and with not much finger pressure holding the two halves together no water leaks out. Possibly food or medical related?

something mechanical made out of lead would wear out pretty quickly.
