I found this sunday after church in a spot where only civil war items have been found. I got a good signal and dug an eagle button in perfect condition. While checking the hole the signal was still there. This continued until three perfect buttons all eagle buttons had been brought to daylight. Within two ft of that i dug four more for a total of seven perfect. Four or five button backs, three iron flat buttons like under garment buttons, one porcelain button that i eyeballed in my loose dirt and this thing. It is made of iron but you can clearly see a very small button that looks like its made into this iron. The pic of it standing up you can see a small link of chain like maybe it hung on a chain at one time. The button is almost flush with one side and recessed on the other. The other side the iron has a square shape to it on the inside. I am puzzled and it has me stumped. It is the "business end" of a civil war era Enfield Rifle's nipple-protector-&-chain. The nipple-protector itself was attached to the end of a short brass chain, and the chain's other end was attached to the rifle's sling loop just in front of the trigger. See the two photos below. The very small 4-hole button just happened to get stuck into the hole in the nipple-protector.
