I didn't get home till this last Saturday morning as I worked till 6:45pm in Ouray Colo. I drove over to Salida Colo and the town was booked up on motels. I got to Buena Vista Colo. around 11:30pm and found a room at the Super 8 and they charged me $126. for one person. I was beat tired and had to hit the sack, just can't handle the night traffic much anymore coming in to Denver late at night. I should have just sleept in the truck. I'll never stay there again, thats just to much for a Super 8 and I thought most the tourist traffic was slowing down, but it was my call, so I can't complain to much. Next morn I meet some GPA members from Kansas at coffee and they came out to pan the Arkansas River, they were very disappointed at the findings in the Arkansas. I've worked it and its all fine to flour gold in that river. I would do it in the same place they were at for free 25 years back, but now the GPA has it all claimed up. Thats sure a way to make slim pickings pay don't you think? I saw this big guy heading out of Buena Vista as he was in the town limits. I'm sure some bow hunters watching his every move. He was a nice one. I took this shot with my phone. I need to purchase a nice camera some day.

Oh I love Ouray. I spent a lot of summers up there as a kid. Gold panning, camping, Jeep trails.... lots of good memories. Is the 4J's campground still there?

Not sure on the 4J campground, but Ouray is a great little place. These days you dodge all the ATV's on the road I use going to the mines. Jeep rentals is a strong business in town and I do need to sample the streams for gold sometime I'm up there. I learned that some of the miners at the mine I work with have been listing on line some nice mineral specimens they've found lately. I've seen pictures of beautiful wire gold specimens found in the region of Ouray. Some fantastic things could be found in Ouray mines. I hope to see one of those specimens someday.

Yeah buddy that's how we make our livin tamrock, off the tourist trade. Even though I live and work in Summit County, industrial tourism capital of Colorado, I don't believe they should make it all at once and make it off of you. I get around BV and Salida a lot as I like to camp down in that part of the country, and that room rate sounds a little high to me. On the bright side, it would be double that here in Summit County right now. It's still fine weather, so maybe you should outfit up to be able to camp a few times a week. $126 saved will set you up with some pretty fair gear, plus you can save up for a camera. Still, that is a good pic of that buck.

It was Friday night after all and yes indeed Summit,Park,Lake & Chaffee do depend on those tourist dollars, so it was to be expected as I'm almost never out on Friday nights and home on the front range. Looks like they've been doing very well this summer with the tourist trade up your way? I lived in the area in the mid 70s to mid 80s. I worked at Overhead Door Co. in Frisco and drove to work from BV. I'd go through either S.Park and or Fremont Pass to get to work. Some changes over the years I've noticed. The Fairplay bucket-line dredge is no longer there and the old Chimney at the old Salt Works at Antero Junct. has crumbled to the ground. Had many good times in your area long ago. I will camp on the road from time to time. I like to do that in the Southern Utah area and a few times up on Cottenwood pass.
