I entered the field this morning with high expectations of finding a piece of history. The battlefield could be seen in the distance and the morning frost was just turning to morning dew. As I crossed the field I decided I would start where I left off yesterday before the neighbor came out to see what I was up to and invite me to detect her property. Her grass was a little too tall and a few more frost should take care of that. I started off heading south advancing a half a coil a swing, never picking my feet up as to leave a visible path for when I would turn and go north. I made 3 20 yard passes before I hit my first target. My GPX and Grey Ghost headphones said it was a bullet about 6 inches. I was thoroughly surprised & thrilled to pull out a pulled Williams cleaner....
I continued on with my head down and hood up focusing on the the ground for the sounds of history calling me. My second target was not far ahead. This single had a wobble in it's tone but I could just not ignore it. I was expecting a square nail only to be surprised with a fired pistol bullet.
At this point I'm happy with my decision to start where I did. I made 2 more 20 yard passes making sure to overlap my last pass. The next signal rang out loud and clear but had low grunts on both ends of my sweep over the target. When I pulled 12" plug out of the ground the signal got better, but I could not find it with my pinpointer . I pulled 4 more inches of dirt out of the hole and saw brass. After carefully clearing the dirt from around the target it a appeared I had found some sort of side plate from a firearm.
My next target was only a few yards ahead and rang out just as loud. This time when I pulled out my 12" plug of dirt the target was in it and easy to find with my pinpointer. At 1st glance it resembled the scabbard hook I had found a few weeks prior. This piece is slightly different with a 90 degree angle. It went into my pouch with a sense of excitement wondering what it might be.
I made 4 or 5 more passes without any history ringing in my ear. While heading North I got a creepy feeling someone was watching me. Then I heard a pull tab calling me. I might of ignored it except for this being such good ground. I was glad to pop a nice little flat button out of the ground. Still feeling like I was being watched I looked over my shoulder to see 5 deer had entered the field with me. 2 does and 3 fawns were grazing towards me keeping a close eye on me.
I continued on soon to turn and head back towards them. As I passed the spot where I had just dug the flat button I swept over the spot and got a bullet signal. I might of missed this one if I had not policed myself to always overlap my last pass. Sure enough there was a nice dropped 3 ringer at about 14 inches.
By this time the lead doe was getting nervous and was headed off the field with the others frolicking behind her. As they got to the edge of the field they all looked off to their left. Me being a avid hunter I knew what that could mean. Sure enough just off in the woods was a nice 8 pointer chasing a hot doe who was not having any of it. Soon after they all disappeared into the woods and left me to my quest.
My next piece of history was a rivet just under the grass line. I've dug several of these at this location , many with leather still attached. Not to far from there I dug a junky signal that read below pull tab which turned out to be another flat button.
I continued on to find a piece from a pump organ. This was my 3rd one at this location. Why there is so many baffles me. My last target of the day might not be of Civil War period but looks to be a fancy piece of horse tack. I love the thrill of everything I find and the plain thrill of being in the field.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself this morning with only one thing weighing on the back of my mind and that's that some people would like to ban metal detecting all together. Anyway thanks for looking and I hope I didn't bore everyone.
