Had a question about detecting Platinum in regards to detectors I use, never having found any. But I'm thinking now that there might be a large number of Detector people who might have the same question for any and all makes and models that we use. The sounds or rather numbers that say a platinum ring might fall under. We understand much depends on size and thickness etc. So anyone here on T-Net that can give any information about what platinum might fall under based on their own experience on any and every brand and model of detector would be well received from all of us I think. Just a little information that could come in handy some time. Thanks fella's.

Hi. Not your question but seeing it got me.
The reason I say is because of Copper nuggets.
And from the other day I swear I found a little Copper nugget. And also I was looking up Platinum nuggets. The same reason as I think a year ago I may have found a little one of those here in Australia.
The other day I was detecting with my Garrett 24k. In a very virgin area. I got a great signal, small, but very good number. Now here where I was is was crazy minerals. I even when I go check with my Minelab Xterra 705 the area with a test bit if .5 gram.
The area the Xterra on half sens on the ground not burried, was noise, noise, just heard. Would not stop. The Garrett 24k half sens, zero ground noise and banged it in. Blitzed the Xterra.
Detecting virgin ground. Half an hr later, bang, 94 on the meter. Maybe 2 inch down. I see a bit covered in clay. Wipe it. Mmm.
Later back at the car, look, hit it with the hammer. Its copper. No way it was anything off of anything. So small its also not worth anything either. But where it was to find it was great. Rare there, copper in the area but to get anything detecting size there was pretty cool.
Platinum has been found in my area and meteorites too. Very rare, but i hope one day...
The picture after I hit it with my rock hamner.
I thought it was gold in ironstone.

I hope Platinum and meteorites will turn up soon for you
Good Luck

Been meaning to ask about it for several months now? Just always forgot to. Anyway....

Me too mate. Unfortunately, when I started detecting I now think, and very much believe I found some meteorites. I threw everything away that was not gold, that was gold in and covered in ironstone and Id smash it. No gold colour, turf it. I then had no idea of other things. I also believe I found some platinum bits. Bang, no gold colour, turf it.
Yrs later in the places I hunted, when later I worked in a central Vic detecting shop, the penny dropped. But too late. I saw guys come in and the Boss owner who knew his stuff would ID things. Id be "oh you gotta be kidding me, I threw them away!" Id sat I threw away several meteorites and a couple of small Plats.
Now isn't this how it goes.
I have been super eyes open careful since. But have not come across one ever since.
Id say I found and chucked them between 1990 and 2000.
Funny story though. Years ago I had an Aboriginal mate, much older than me. Great guy, we used to go fishing and yabbying, your crawfish, we had great times. Anyway. Before I detected he was in it in central Vic when detectors first came out. Damn he found some gold!
Anyway, he and a mate heard about some gravels from a puddler that got used as an old road surface. So they went with their old Bounty Hunters to detect it. They found ounces and ounces on the old road and thought it was amazing. Anything that was good sound they kept, gold. Anything disced they threw into the farmers paddock next to the road as junk.
A while later, a yr, he got wised up, gold with ironstone discs like junk.
He went back, asked the farmer, got the go ahead. They threw away more than they first found. He had and showed me a 4 ounce bit half covered in ironstone shaped like a butterfly.
Great guy and I very much miss him. Especially our yabby competitions.
He beat me by the way every time. 😂

Specific conductivity of platinum is in the same range as tin and iron, and is twice more conductive than lead and 10 thimes less than copper. You should find it without any problem, if tehere is one....

I’ve only found one platinum ring, it rang up 15/16 on my nox 800.
Kind of thought around that. A nickel at 13 say, 15-16 on the 800 would be in the pull tab range I think, very much like gold rings in general, depends on where your at, just can't dig EVERY pill tab or can slaw etc. in some places, but when I use the Nox, I'll remember the 15/16. Thanks Dave

Sounds like it would have low numbers then. Foil, Tin and so on.

Chilli..I remember my Dad used crawdads(crawfish)fishing for trout many many years ago
Someday I’m hoping that you and I will recover some meteorites and platinum

I have found several platinum rings with my detectors, don't remember the TID numbers, but the tone was loud and clear.

It should be simmilar or somewhat higher than lead, it would probably depend on size and shape of the object found. Pure platinum is rare to come around, varius platinum alloys, haveing differen properties, are more common. You should expect any ID from lead to alluminium, consequently.

Me too mate. Im sure when detecting here was younger I threw some away. Mine were small maybe biggest grams to ounce range. But in one area I used to go a guy I know showed me one several kilos in weight. Be brought it to show me in a shoe box and it 3/4 filled the box.
Damn I wish I knew what I know now back then. :icon_scratch:

IDK about down there, but up here native copper of any type is worth quite a bit more than spot at gem & mineral shows.

I was wondering myself where platinum would fall. I was very surprised it wasn't up with silver, gold, and aluminum.

This list shows the conductive order of some commonly used metals and alloys, based on equal sizes.
  1. Pure silver
  2. Pure copper
  3. Pure gold
  4. Aluminum
  5. Zinc
  6. Nickel
  7. Brass
  8. Bronze
  9. Iron
  10. Platinum
  11. Steel
  12. Lead
  13. Stainless steel
