Found this 10 days ago trying to figure out exactly what it is.
Reminds me of an older style plate that rarely if ever turn up in this area.
Note the 3 attachment points on the reverse where hooks were soldered on at some point.
When I found this it was face down filled with mud and noticed the attachments stuck in the mud and wasn't sure how they were attached but when cleaning they just fell out into my hand. So I assume they came off a long time ago also note the small hole at one end of the piece. Any help will be appreciated. P4300200.webpP4300201.webpP4300202.webpP4300203.webpP4300204.webp

The only reason why I say a shield for saddle buckles, is the three thing-a-ma-jigs adjacent to the the item

The amount of curve to the plate makes me think it may be a British plate of some sort. I can't find it in the plate book.

That's kinda what I was thinking/ Hoping.
That curve has me wondering, it has kinda rounded/clipped Corners.
Def, missing a Hook.
Thinking .....Maybe it could be some kind of Buckle Cover It seems the hooks may not have been that Strong to serve as a heavy duty type piece??

It has a Plain face like many Early Plates but the curve does seem a-bit Much.

I thank you & everyone else for your time.

Here is something similar on Sgt. Riker's page:

Militia cross belt plate.
This plate was recovered in Central Virginia. It was used by
the Confederates, and by cadets at military schools.

That is a very close match . Similar style hooks (except 4 on S.R.'s) and a very similar curve .
The solder on style of the Hooks is much the same. Hmmmmmmm.

Hopefully I dug my first Plate a week before I did my 'Official' U.S. Box. Then Plates will start popping up everywhere.
Yeah right !!! lol
Thanks for the help.
