A return trip to the site gave up a couple of goodies. My oldest coin to date and my first large cent (1848)

A prayer pendant that looks pretty old

What looks like a tax token bent in half

IMG_0900.JPGIMG_0902.JPG

A copper shotgun shell. The entire shell appears to be copper and after it was shot it was squished.

Not sure what this is but it looks old and odd so I kept it.

And what appears to be an old hand forged axe head.

I have a lot more ground to cover and have been saving the sweet spot so I should have more finds soon.

Your unidentified item is a link from a cistern pump chain. I've found a lot of them myself and, although they looked familiar, couldn't figure out what they were until recently. I live in a house built in 1876 and there's a couple of cisterns behind it. I had removed the top off of one, pulled the chain and stored it for later re-use. I needed a length of chain a month or two ago and low and behold....there was the answer to my "what is that" item. There are several on each chain, every foot or so, and then the chain is encased in a pipe. Each of those connection pieces had a rubber gasket in the center and when the chain was pulled through a length of pipe that went down into the cistern water, it created suction and brought the water up to the water spout. Would have to draw an illustration to describe the process better but....that's what the little doo-dad is from. Happy hunting. Great finds by the way.
