Hey all,
Here's a penny that I just came across. The disk appears to have a thickened area, starting from Lincoln's back at the 7:00 position and continuing in a concentric arc around the rim until after the last 'T' in 'TRUST'.
It is especially pronounced under the word 'IN', bisecting the letters.

Methinks this may be a planchet error. What say ye?

HH,
Bob
Postscript -
The very next penny I examined had an even more pronounced effect, with evidence of a rough edge and several "ripples" along the same edge as the first coin.

Re: Planchett / stamping error?

I have seen quite a few like that, it is relatively common. Sorry.

Thanks Wayne for the info. Nothing to be "sorry" about. These are the first ones of their kind I have found, and I am jazzed about it, even if they are not valuable.

Do you know what kind of mechanism produces this type of error?
Thanks!
HH,
Bob

Sometimes there's a fine line between a "mint error" and "poor minting" ~ collectors want major errors, but they don't care for poor minting (or minor errors). The pic's show what happens when a die gets a little over used. Those dies should have been taken out of service before those coins were struck ~ it's kinda an error, but not really a desirable error.
