Hello fellow TN'ers :) My girlfriend and are are fairly new to gold prospecting. We live in Ceres, CA just south of Modesto. We have been doing a little prospecting up in the hills in the south Motherlode... Groveland, Coulterville area. We are heading up to Placerville area for the Gold Show Saturday and were thinking of doing a little prospecting for a few hours while we were up that way. I was wondering if someone could point us in a good direction to get a little color in out pans. I understand highbanking is only in season in May, so I was just going to bring a sluice (Ba"zook"er) and some pans. I have both 2 and 4wd vehicles but my girl hurt her back earlier this week so we are looking for something fairly easy access walking wise. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thank you in advance! :icon_thumleft:

No.. we are not GPAA members yet :( I was looking through several posts and maps of the Auburn SRA for public spots, but I have no idea where to start. Ruck a Chucky? Shirtail Creek? Yankee Jims? Iowa Hill? I have never really been to this area so I have been doing alot of research but I am in need of a nudge in the right direction. My girlfriend doesn't like getting 'skunked' if you know what I mean. :violent1: Lol.

I recently joined and haven't made it up to those claims yet. But the Auburn State recreation area is huge 30000 plus acres of public area. A lot of people have success in this area. High banking is not allowed there

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to the sometimes crazy passion called gold prospecting!

All the best,

Lanny

Thank you Lanny. I have been lurking for quite a while... just trying to learn as much as I can from my fellow prospectors and the wealth of knowledge that comes from all the years of experience contained in these forums. I have read many of your stories and tips and have enjoyed each and every one. In fact, you may find this humorous, but every time my girlfriend and I get out and we are scoping out a new spot... the first thing that goes through my head is "Remember what Lanny in AB said... gold is heavy, never forget that" and I find myself analyzing the creek bed looking for low points, slack spots, and boulder trails ;) That is all you... thank you for that.

Here's a quick example Lanny... We have been working this spot and using your advice, I tried to read the creek and find the deepest area downstream from the exposed bedrock in the pic. Also, you can see the path the bigger rocks have taken in relation to our hole.

And this is the result... keep in mind this is just the bigger pieces from only 2 buckets! (I still have the rest of the buckets sitting in the garage waiting for me). It may not be much... but boy were we both exciting when we saw that nice little chunky one!!!

There is no " HI BANKING SEASON"...you can hit the South Fork of the American in several places near Coloma /Lotus you ,might not be able to run your gold trap, you can definitely scrape some cracks and get decent color with a pan. The majority of the smaller sluice-able creeks around here are on or accessed via private property.

So would you guys recommend the SFA mentioned above, or making the trek over to the SRA? Unfortunately my girlfriend's back has deteriorated even more over the past few days which breaks my heart because I know how much she really wants to get her hands dirty this weekend somewhere new. She is stubborn and refuses to miss the gold summit... I know after walking around she is going to be in alot of pain. Wherever we go will have to be almost drive-up / level trail access which I am not even sure really exists. (Day use area somewhere maybe) :dontknow: Well thank you all for your suggestions... perhaps when her back is back to normal we will make the trip back up that way again and see if the gold gods will be kind enough to smile down on us. Cheers! :occasion14:

I may have a spot for you to go this weekend, it just depends if my buddy is at the Mining Summit or not. Private drive up access to a great area on the SFA right in Lotus. PM me for more info.
