Re: Pitstones, nutting stones, let's see them

Here's some of mine, there are some unpitted pieces and other hardstone in the group shots as well. I added the triangular sided hammer? that's pitted on three sides, it's similar to the piece unitas posted the other day. There's a double pitted stone in here too, and an unusual elongated piece that's pitted on both sides.

So what do you all think these pitted areas are for, just a thumb / finger groove for control, or something else? I know nutting stones have smaller usually deeper holes that conform to the size of nuts, these pitted stones are quite different imo.

Good thread Chuck, and nice pieces you posted. I think most people think these are underrated as far as collecting but they were just as important and saw as much use as any other tool or point imo.

Re: Pitstones, nutting stones, let's see them

Thirty7, thanks for posting those. They look just like the ones we find over here. I cannot help but drag them home. I line my flower beds with them ( I realize it is sorta irresponsible stewardship of the past but, they became a storage problem). I sometimes see folks post stones with natural cavities so this may present a good opportunity for people to see what some examples look like. Hope all is well.

:headbang: I was walking the Ohio River on my first hunt. Found this and something told me to keep it. I have been told it could be a nutting stone but I seem to think it could be a fire starter. It sits in your hand perfectly and is polished where your thumb , middle and ring finger sit. Still one of my favorites. Thanx :headbang:

Re: Pitstones, nutting stones, let's see them

Another interesting thread I'm going to have to go look at all my stones now. :hello2:

Re: Pitstones, nutting stones, let's see them

SWB- I think your stone is natural. Notice the other "holes" in the stone. That hole just looks too irregular to me. JMO.

Re: Pitstones, nutting stones, let's see them

I thought these were nutting stones or some kind of grinding stone when I found them but I've been wondering lately if they might actually be natural products of drip erosion???

What do ya'll think? The first one looks like it could have been used and the "hole" appears to show signs of scraping toward its shallow end. The second one is VERY similar but the hole isn't uniform in depth which is actually what makes me wonder if they are both natural.

Here are some pitstones from my area. I actually found 6 in a few hours earlier this week while out with Lostlake88. Three of them where in an 10 ft. square area. There are also a few hammerstones and pestles mixed in. If anyone else has any please post them.

Ohio

:help: How do you ID them as pitstones ???
