Went back to the same spot again late this afternoon and found one flat button, a piece of the buckle and this big odd piece. Kind of looks like a head(?). Any ideas?

That is the top of a piston depending on age of the site would probably be from a Hit And Miss engine.

Thanks. It's an old site. what is a hit and miss and what would the material be? Thanks again for looking.

The material would either be aluminum or cast iron. From the looks of it aluminum.A hit and miss engine was used to power lots of equipment such as saw mills. They came in all different horse powers and would be set to fire and make two or three strokes then fire again.Go to google and type in hit or miss engines and you should be able to find some videos of them running.I have one that hits every other stroke but can be set to hit as you please, you will love the sound they make.
