I use a Teknetics Omega 8000 w/11DD and 10con , a Fisher CZ-70 pro , teknetics pinpointer.
I jumped into this hobby with both feet this year. My wife also decided she would like to try it and we spend some great outdoor time hunting together. I didn't go cheap when buying equipment. I thought it better to learn on equipment that people were having luck with. So we went with 2 Teknetics Omega 8000's. But with all the reading I did, the pinpointer was like an afterthought. Some didn't even use them. Seemed you should get close enough with the on-board pinpointing. So i bought a couple of Teknetics/Fisher/BH pinpointers that were good to about 2 inches. They seemed to work fine.

I went out with Lowbatts and the boys and realized I was taking longer to retrieve my targets than the other guys. I got that 'Oh Yeah" moment when mayo was showing me his machine and started to dig a target. I saw him do a sweep with his Garretts Pro and nothing. Then he said he can't be that far off and went around the perimeter of the whole and there was his target. The Garretts picked it right up.

I immediately bought one and what a difference. I am finding the targets that were getting away or disappearing. I dig the the depth and the garretts does the rest in short order. So I am hitting more targets and not burning out as fast.

My point? When helping out a newb or just someone having trouble recovering targets, let them know that one of the first things to get is a Garretts Pro-pinpointer or something better. This was a weak link in my equipment link.

Aye matey!

Went without a PP for years and was fairly good with the VCO PP on my rigs so it didn't seem to bother me. But one thing for sure, shallow stuff sometimes takes longer than deep stuff and the Garret almost makes popping those shallow clads a breeze.

Probably gonna go get some trashy ground cleaned up this fall and go after the deep stuff underneath thanks to that tool.

You'll like that Pro-Pointer. You can even "de-tune" it by turning it on
next to a piece of metal so you can decrease it's sensitivity on the fly.
Turn it off and then on again away from the metal and it reverts back
to it's normal sensitivity.

I never realized how valuable those could be until I hunted the woods in the
spring in all that gooy, wet mud that sticks to EVERYTHING. . . even silver :D

You can get it to go deeper too.

I tried this in the field and worked.

just don't lose it....

From what I gather, the Pro-Pointer is one of the best, if not THE best, battery-powered pinpointers out there. A lot of people seem to use them, both locally and in many YouTube videos.

BUT for me, it's the Sunray or bust. Just my 0.02!!

I think if you go with a handheld pointer, the pro-pointer is great. I use a Sunray inline probe like Joe, and love it. There are advantages and disadvantages to either, but I side with the probe. Some people side against the probe. It comes down to individual preferences. I'll never loose my sunray, it wont run out of batteries on me, it ID's targets through my detector, I don't need to take my headphones off, and it will even pinpoint. That said, I can easily bump the switch, especially on a hill, and not realize that I'm not detecting with my coil and end up wasting time.
Some people also like the pistol probe, which claims to have 5-6 inch depth, but I believe that much depth on a pin pointer is counter productive. What I like on the Garrett pro-pointer is that it gives indication on how close you are to the actual target. Before I had my sunray, I had a couple el cheapo's, the Automax V4 and Centech (from harbor freight). Both broke after 6 months each, and both were not capable of detecting a coin from more that 1/4 to 1/2 inch away. I know there are people who will claim the automax gets 3" and mine was just a dud, but I can't believe that claim.
