Is there are REALLY GOOD pinpointers around the specs I have listed below. I want something inexpensive but works on a depth around 4-6" and detect silver and gold.

This is what I am looking for as far as size goes. A style about the size of a camp fire lighter, the widest part being as wide as the handle with the lighter fluid in it.

A probe about the same length, which I have plans to modify it and add wire between the probe and the electronics.

The reason I am asking for an inexpensive one is that I am looking to take it apart and make a "Wooden Walking Stick Probe" about 4-5 feet in length that I can take hiking.

If anyone knows of any and can post pics that would be great!

I don't think they make one like that. The only one I know that could possibly detect 5 or 6 inches is the detectorpro probe. Most will only detect about an inch..with the exception of the garrett or the detectorpro. GL in finding one.

I am not really wanting to have it detect that deep, but if it can detect lets say 2 inches, that would work. I am wanting to find a circuit board that is no wider than about 3 inches wide, by anywhere from 2-4 inches in height. My intentions are to make a walking stick in 2 halves with the middle of it cut out for wiring, pinpointer, and the circuit board. Then cap the top off with another piece of wood to cover the circuit board. Basically I want to be able to stand somewhere and be unnoticed standing, minding my own business without anyone being suspicious as to what I am doing. If they see me with a hiking stick, then they would pay me no mind.

That would be sneaky...hmmm..ever thought about in the heel of a shoe.???? Another Maxwell Smart. If you do get it finished I sure would love to see the cane.

Well I probably won't get it started or finished until I get back from Fort Dix, N.J. in March. I had an idea that even though you can't metal detect in or on National Forests, etc, then simply walking, hiking, kinda stopping once in a while and kind of move the "hiking stick" around listening for beeps. Of course I would probably haev to start of with a 4X4 peice of Oak or other hardwood tappering it down to about 1 inch at the bottom for the probe and be able to put a rubber stool boot on it to protect the bottom. When I find the right probe at a cost that isn't too expensive that I can use and make the "hiking stick" I will post picks when I get it made.

Paint your walking stick white with a red tip and no one will be suspicious when you are swinging it back and forth.

Yeah, with the dark sunglasses with the Stevie Wonder head pitching to go with it!

Hey auferret, I think that will work! Of course i wouldn't need to LED lights, but I wonder if it has a speaker for the beeps. When I get this finished, I am going to stain and tung oil it so one will see it looks like one piece of stick.

According to the description at pinmall, "The Little Wizard accurately indicates metal by emitting a high pitch beep tone and illuminating an array of LED's. " You could easily remove the speaker and install a headphone jack.

My "hiking stick" needs to look like a "hiking stick" to I think adding headphones to it would defeat the purpose

Pretty unique direction your headed in with that walking stick idea. If you ever run for president, you got my vote bro.

I think the Vibraprobe sounds like what you're looking for.HH

I was just going to say, you need to make it vibrate.

Really good idea, but it's going to be hard to find such a skinny circuit board cheap. The VibraProbe is probably your best bet as John says.

Since as you say "You can't detect in National Forests" etc. then making this "metal detector" is exactly what you WILL be doing. I personally don't think its a good idea and if you get caught it will just add to the bad press we seem to always get by "sneaking" around with detectors in areas we cannot go into.

Harley Man - Forget about whether what you're thinking about is good for the detecting community, it's not good for you. Detecting in national forests is illegal. If they catch you with a regular detector you could probably be nice and play stupid (once) and get out of it with a warning. If you get caught with the device you're taking about there's no disguising your covert actions. Even if you could casually move your foot around and not be noticed you still gotta retrieve the targets. If a ranger is watching you from a distance with binoculars (they do that regularly in some national forests) the the jig is up and you could be in some serious trouble.

lets see you want us to aid you in designing an illegall metal detecting device for use in natiional parks where metal detecting is banned? --- WRONG!!!

while I disagree with their no detecting policy in the national parks --it is still the LAW and until we get it changed or repealed --it must be respected --to safe guard the overall hobby rights.

Join the Natural Park system as a part time gate keeper.
They won't bust their own.

I like the hot air balloon idea but it would showup when the heat is applied.
Hydrogen would not need that. NO SMOKING.

A pinpointer that goes 6" deep ?
Um, ?????
