Most probably rhodolite garnet. I don't know of any NC sapphires being that clean, but there is a nice occurrence of gem rhodolite in NC; plus, the color is a dead ringer for rhodolite. So, yea, I've talked myself into it; rhodolite garnet it is!

I agree with Garnet. There are Corundum specimens from N.C. that are this clean but they are very rare and not this color.
