Looks too big to be a grave, though idk how NAs marked their grave sites. Probably just a rock pile, possibly ruins of a small shed.

See if you can't contact your local history society for old atlases of your area and see what might've been there.

For various reasons many pioneer graves aren't very deep, and rocks were piled on the grave to keep the wolves from digging it up. I would think the odds are it's a pioneer grave.

Cti - brings up a good point. Have you done research on the property? looked at old land maps, insurance maps, etc from the 19th & 18th c and know if there was a house site or building, civil war camp, rev,1812 war, Indian wars, etc.. of some sort on the property. Are you finding any relics around this rock pile or near by it that would indicate something? are you seeing lot of broken pottery, glass, etc? If you walk 100 yards around this rock pile, are these rocks naturally occur in this area or were they brought in @ some point, etc etc. There is a-lot tooo it.. Best thing to do is hunt near the pile and see what artifacts are laying around and even digging test holes around the rock pile about 12-20 inches deep and see what you hit like broken glass,pottery,etc.. It could be many of things, i see these type of old rock piles a-lot some dating to the 18th c, some dating to the 1820s-1830s and lot of civil war rock piles of these sort that were used for riflepits, cellars, etc etc.. Do some research on the property and you may be in for a surprise.

Some of those boulders look too big for me to think of a pioneer grave. The area of coverage negates that possibility for me as well. Just my opinion; but I would definitely do those suggestions from HSD:
-Scout the area for similar rock types
-Spiral outward from the site, scanning the surrounding area (within maybe 20') for artifacts - not necessarily metal!
-Research the area.

Another thought: are there any home developments nearby? If any exist within about a quarter mile, they could be remnants from the construction company leveling out the ground by pushing dirt around and moving bigger rocks. Suggestion #2 will help with this.

There's no houses for a quarter mile or so I know nothing new has been built around here for at least 40 yrs the road it is by was a county dirt road but its just a deer trail now as it hasn't been maintained or used for 40 yrs at least also. I have been detecting around the area but I can't get a hit on anything other than 2 stray beer cans (did I mention I'm using a bounty hunter that I don't think is going any deeper than maybe 4 inches) as far as the research I haven't went to any county records or anything yet but my grandpa lived here for 94 yrs and he didnt know of any home places around the area. But he use to tell me stories of taking a pot of food to the pretty boy Floyd gang when he was a kid so I was already hunting treasure before I ever heard of a metal detector lol

I'd say a little prayer ... like God please don't let me find any bones .. and if someone is under these rocks I hope they are already in heaven ... then I'd dig ... and if I found bones I would quickly put them back and high tale it out of there lol

I hate digging bones. I dug an 1800s saddle buckle. I started looking around and there were horse bones scattered all over! I freaked out. But it was cool I got to see the horse that the saddle went on. I hope you figure this mystery out!

Had to have some place to toss them when you're clearing a field for planting. Sometimes rock piles are just piles of rocks.

I've done that before to but I never took the time to square the corners of my rock piles

I've seen quite a few graves out in the woods, some Indian, some pioneer.

They look a lot like this.

Did you excavate the rocks at all? You found something. Whether it's an old outbuilding foundation, a spot where the farmer unloaded his wagon or some sort of camp. Are there any unusual clearings in the woods? It could be a corner marker for a property line.
