I like finding something worthwhile after what looked like a wasted time in the woods. Had a nice surprise after piecing together 11 of 12 pieces of this "junk". I'm holding the piece upside down, but the grip area looks well worn unlike the shiny rest of it. Was this some hairy pioneers preferred drinking mug? Or part of something like a vase or whatever? Found 6" deep near a (typically) mid 1800's midden in south central Ontario.

I think it's glazed pottery. I'm no expert but that's the only similar looking material I've noticed after searching 19th century ceramics.

Remind me of the handle to a picture and bowl set from a wash stand

A few more examples the ornate handle is a common feature

If I'm right you're going to need more glue lol

Looks like it could be a stoneware handle coated in "Albany Slip". Very cool handle you got there. A little epoxy and it is strong as ever.

Thanks ya'll, this area of the woods doesn't really look like a spot to set up fine furniture though. There were some established homes there judging by the buried nails & glass but they seemed umm... poor. At least some of the people there carved their own buttons & toothbrushes out of bone/antler & reworked old tools. My friend has a cool file-turned knife etc. The fancy furniture just seems a little out of place. These homes were small.

I know what you're saying most of the places that I hunt it seems like the people were dirt poor

But still your handle is ornate so it went to something fancy

Agreed. A luxury item perhaps. It would be my favorite man mug until the handle broke off. Then I'd feel inadequate :(

Not all poor people were lacking material things. Many had heirlooms or traded objects that they had no idea were of any value. While perhaps having no money or cupboards filled with fine china, there were instances where they did have a few nice things that eventually made their way into the ground.

These were manly men though, hairier than their women! I can only imagine the profanity from this dude after breaking his flynt stick on a pitch black night. Possibly cold or raining. Hope he didn't have any red headed stepchildren

Thanks Village. I looked up some 'stoneware albany slip' pics & that looks like the stuff. I'd never heard of it. Still rooting for a beer mug over a vase. I should have mentioned the site runs along a river so a wash stand seems unlikely... But possible. I appreciate all comments. Sorry I only have a handle to go on. HH
