Piece of Eight

Well I was at the local flea market today and there was a guy selling his unwanted items.
He was in his mid-80's and said he just wants to get rid of his stuff. I guess he has nobody to leave it to.
As I was looking around I noticed this 1821 mexican 8 reales. the price on it was $3.00, I was to say the least stunned. So I asked him why so cheap and he said "just want it gone."
I felt kinda bad and tried to offer more but he refused. Long story short, I got this coin for $3.00, Yippee :icon_king:

Awww, how sweet of you to offer him more. Congrats on a great flea market find. ;D

Nice find! And you didn't even have to get all hot and sweaty and fight off the tics and mosquitos and poison ivy to get it!

WTG!

Re: Piece of Eight (at a bargain)

I went to a flea market here in town a couple of summers ago and found a vendor selling all of his old coins at face value. I asked him why and he said they belonged to his ex-wife and she told him to sell off her stuff and give her the money so that is what he did. 8)

I got a LOT of great bargains from that vendor, I spent almost $200.00 that day, but the coins I got were absolutely awesome.

You never know what you can find at a flea market now a days!

I would be very wary of anyone selling something so cheap. It's probably cursed and you have to sell it to get rid of the curse. If it's too go to be true, it probably isn't true.

I don't think negatively :icon_king:

I love the toning on the reverse side of the coin.

he wouldn't take any more than $3.00

Nice close up pics!

Just a note: As a child I had the exact same coin except it was a little earler date. But even the toning was the same. I was a coin collector and setup next to my parents at the flea market on a little table buying and selling my coins and proof sets. I took the coin in on a trade. When I went to the coin store to see what kind of trade value I could get, they showed me a few that they had that were just like it that were counterfeits. Since I was a young teen and the coin dealer might have been trying to rip me off, my grandpa took me to 3 other coin delaers who all said the same thing. It felt a little light compared to what you would think it should. (It would not stick to a magnet), the toning appeared to be like a shellac . . . so, for one thing, I truely hope yours is authentic and valuable. At $3.00 you have nothing to loose, but there were apparently some reproductions that were floating around in the 60's - 70's of this coin and 1740's Australian Thalers, so take it to your local dealer just to make sure.

It's not like they are extremely valuable but for some reason counterfeits were made. I look at flea markets and garage sales as part of my regular treasure hunting regeime.

Once again, I hope it's authentic because, what an awesome find. I asked an old timer at the flea market recently how much his 2 morgan silver dollars were and he said $5.00 each ;D

well i know it is deffinately silver. because of the ring when i accidently dropped it. no noticable damage.
but i will take that advise and have it looked at .

Good sign. That's another thing . . . mine did not sound like silver, it felt and sounded like it was a casted alloy. So far, so good. I am sure yours is real if it feels heavy and you think it it silver. :icon_pirat:

I think I am going to hit more flea markets :icon_pirat:

I would had offered $2

**** If the coins are, indeed cursed and you need to get rid them at face value, let me do you a solid and take them off your hands, at face value of course ;)
