Was sifting the creek bottom today and found this. Never found clay before so I'm not really sure how to identify it. Only thing I did was give it the Bic test to make sure it wasn't plastic or rubber, which it isn't. Any ideas?

to my surprise the creek bottom is clay underneath all the gravel, rock and other buildup.

It sure looks like the bottom of a pipe bowl with stem hole to me. I'm not sure if it is native or colonial period. Is the clay white under the "patina"?

Looks to me like it may be soapstone. Looks kind of like the broke piece I found. this one came off a woodland site. Nice find-

It's definitely a stained piece of kaolin clay pipe bowl

I can still see the heel on the bottom and part of the seam

Interesting gator. I saw the seam as well which is what made me think it might not be hand made. Thanks for the input guys. My first creek find and glad its what i thought it was
