I found this in the woods behind my house. My house dates back to the 1740's or so, and the woods haven't been used for farming since the late 1800's. It has three dots that someone punched in on each side (not holes), it is almost as thick as a George II copper but a little bit bigger. It also looks to have been cut manually rather than machine made like this. What are your thoughts as to what it might be. My guess is an old copper that someone hammered, cut, and decorated. What do you think?

Maybe the squares were caused by a being hammered onto the coin? Could I safely call this find colonial?

Weird, I just went back out to metal detect in the same area. One hundred feet away I found another one. It is much thinner and rang much lower on the metal detector, but the same exact size. That one is clearly a dandy button that was cut, you can see the design perfectly. I don't know if the first one is a dandy button though. I guess this means that the first one is also from the late 1700's though.

Sounds like a great spot !

Thanks! I also found an 1800's bale seal just now. It nice to always have a fallback site less than fifty feet from your back door!

It was common practice to cut coins for change back in the day. Very nice finds, the are very hard to find.
