Piece of 8?

A buddy of mine from g this the other day, I’m guessing it’s a piece of 8.. but why is it copper color and not silver?

If it isn't .896 fine silver, it isn't an authentic 8R.
Maybe, under all that crud, it is silver.

that is the coin. yours has a Mexico City mint mark. as to why yours is copper colored

It's not 'a piece' of 8, as that refers to it after its been cut into pieces.

SOMETIMES... REPEAT sometimes... rarely actually...

They color this way from time to time when in the right environment... many times in a jewelry box over years next to certain other metals.

Take your finger hard and rub it vigorously and post your results... use a rag as well... IF it continues to be copper... fake.

IF it "cleans" it... then real.

Um... actually... Your a "Brit"... the term comes from you guys... it is not called a "piece of eight" because of cutting... its because of its denomination.

Yes these were cut and called this... but this is actually 8 reales. and marked as such.

You Brits... nicknamed the "pieces".... ready for it... "Bits".

I’m needing a chalk board to keep up AARC. You ARE the MAN. I have often heard that 2 bits but that is jeopardy training info right there. How did or why is there a half dime instead of a nickel? A piece of 8 kinda works out to be metric when I do the math.

I will add... NOW... somehow... these have taken on a whole new name... and I noticed this particularly with not only metal detectorists on this site... but everywhere metal detecting.

And that term / name is now somehow... "cut".... don't know why... but it works and people know this and what you are talking about when it is said... even I call em that now.

So now people call em... "cut reale". :/ so be it... it is ... what it is... right

I see many "bits" ... AKA "cut pieces" mis-identified... but don't say anything.

Many of these are not "bits of eight"... but are "bits of escudos"... or bits of a "doubloon".

Everyone forgets about the Doubloon.

Cru, in fact it IS a piece of eight (assuming it is authentic). If the coin is cut, it is cut into what are called 'bits'.
Actually, the British called the Spanish dollar a Piece of Eight (which consists of 8 bits.)
Here on this side of the pond, we old folks might still call a US quarter--'two bits'.

Yup thats the whole eight no pieces there unless you are a whiz with crazy glue! A scale and calipers would tell you if its the real(e) deal. Underweight and correct thickness and size = fake, oversize n correct weight would be weird n fake, undersize and underweight I'd go real since they do shed a bit of metal in the ground. I've found them leached with rust from touching iron in the ground. Anywhere from black, orange or fresh shiny silver is how I've dug them. I'm no expert but I've got a few in the collection.

There is a good book written about the contemporary counterfeit 8 reales. I looked at my copy and did not see one listed that looked to be a match to this one - there are many varieties though. Is the date 1807?
