Hello!

We found this item at a beach in Kennebunk, Maine.

The material is bamboo, and the metal components could potentially be gold due to absolutely no corrosion.

The area is known to have shipwrecks (The Columbia which sank in 1818)

Could this be from a shipwreck???

What in the world is it?

The metal pieces appear to be riveted/pinned in place. All the cuts in the middle piece are symmetrical except for one cut which is shorter. (Seen in photo)

It's broken, but near the broken end are two tiny holes which may have held more rivets/pins to which something was attached?

Thanks everyone!!!

I was about to say the same, based on the slotted discs on the shaft, and wear above where they would slide.

I should mention its length, 10" overall. The tip is hollow.

Also, the metal is VERY heavy for its size, which makes me lean more towards being gold.

I agree with it being part of an umbrella shaft, the 10" overall length would be about right for the upper portion of an umbrella shaft, broken off about where the latch would be for when it was in the opened position, which would explain the "two tiny holes" where the mechanism that held it open would have been attached, as far as the tip being opened it could be just worn down since many people used their umbrella for a walking stick.

As far as the metal being possible gold, it could of belonged to a wealthy person, but in the photos it looks like it brass to me, the best way to determine if it's gold is too take it to a good jeweler and have the metal tested for gold, if it is gold you would have what looks to be over an ounce, which is worth a good bit of money and worth the time to have it tested!!

This just my option, it could be something else, but I still think umbrella.

This is fantastic, thanks for the hypothesis everyone! We will take it to a jeweler for testing, fingers crossed!

Cheers!
