I went to the park yesterday and found a few coins and a cheap necklace. Stayed a little over an hour. I think I have hunted this place out! :D This afternoon my son called and asked if Charlie and I wanted to go fishing at Locust Fork river. Sounded like fun to me, so we packed up and headed on over. They fished and I detected all the fishing weights. :P

While digging around, Charlie yelled for me to bring the camera. I looked up and saw a big fish just jumping around like crazy! I ran to the truck and grabbed the camera and got back to the bank just in time to see this HUGE snake dragging a big 'ole catfish onto a rock! The first pic is for perspective so's you can see the size of the river. That fisherman is my son. He had waded across to the other side...

This snake was on the other side of the river from us. He had to have been close to, if not over five feet long..

notice his tail wrapped around the rock to the left...

What an exciting thing to experience! I'm not quite sure what kind of snake this is, so any thoughts welcomed. ;)

Sweet finds Nana. good job, that snake looks big, and is camo pretty well , would not be a viper would it. i would not hunt the woods there, and understand if you don't either, yikes

Nana, I have spent quite a few years handling snakes, and at first, I figured yours was a common "northern watersnake", I have personally handled specimens that approach 5' in length(although that is VERY large). But in looking at the photo, I noticed the snake appears to only be two "colors", which makes me believe, rather strongly that you got a great pic of the largest copperhead I have EVER seen. Odds are that if it is a copperhead, it is a female, and if she's that big, she has definately had babies, so be careful in that area, huh ?? Copperheads can be really, really good at hiding.

Sorry, nana, I though you were in PA for some reason, I forgot you were down south, that is definately a copperhead, they are VERY dangerous though not(usually) very aggressive.

Very nice pics Nana. One thing I remember about Alabama is,there are lots of snakes. I grew up in Gulf Shores and cotten mouths were seen daily. Some times to close!

thats pretty cool. I think i would have gotten closer, but thats a bad habit of mine.

:D I was confused too, with that size! :o I've seen a lot of copperheads in my life, but NEVER one of this size! :P There are quite a few different kind of poisonous snakes in Bama and that's a great reason to hunt the parks this time of year! :D We came home and immediately started the google searching. Looks like a Northern watersnake, but not in Bama. Was thinking copperhead...but that size!?! :o

Thanks ya'll! Nana :)

I would have to agree that is a very large copperhead, one of the biggest I've seen. I used to have a 28" long coral snake which is just as rare size wise. I have also been bitten by a copperhead, they won't kill you if your healthy, but they will sure make you wish you were dead. Great pic!

Please Nana save the snake pics. I bumped a copper head with a Fisher coil back in the 80's in the middle of a field. The biggest one I have ever seen. I couldn't believe that it was out in the middle of a field with no cover to hide under. Be careful!!!

LOOKS like a copperhead, but that big? Huge for one. Also I thought that they shyed away from water!? IMHO. Great photos P.S. What kind of fish were you going for?

Sorry Nana, I don't know much about snakes other than that's the kind I'd stay away from. Great pictures and a few good finds. HH

My gawd, Nana! Wild pics, cool story. I can just hear you saying "HUGE snake" and "big ole catfish" :D

Glad you guys got out and had some fun this weekend. Cool finds - Oh, and a zipper pull! You'd best include that in your CTH display, doncha think? ;)

You find Copperheads around water almost more than you do water moccasins. I blew the picture of the head up, now I have no doubt as to what it is. Great Pics.

Nice finds, Nana!! Now, that one bad a$$ snake...the kind you want to stay far away from.
Loved the pic with son fishing.

;) RR

Awesome post Nana! I didn't know snakes attacked and ate fish. HH, Mike

big ole copper head got her fangs sunk into that catfish -- he might have been trying to snack on her youngins or else she might have just wanted a snack herself -- the females get bigger in the copper head snake world -- they are dangerous and if they have young ones around are highly aggresive at that time (all women type folks will whip up on ya the best they can -- if you mess with therir youngins)-- ;D be careful unlike rattlers you don't get the "warning" first often its the bite-- that catfish looks to be about a 2 LB size big ole bullhead really big for a bullhead --- a battle of the old ones -- seems the fish lost this one.
