This ring was found close by a South Carolina Palmetto State seal button, Flower button, London flat button, and a small cuff button. after looking at it I think there was a picture at one time under the (glass?) surface of the ring. if you look at picture 1 on the right of the ring you can see where the black background under the glass is slid a little to the other side. I hope it is not just my imagination playing tricks on me. If there is a possibility that a picture is underneath how would I go about trying to bring it back to life or at least verify that it is a picture resting in that ring? I have heard during Civil war times that the capability existed to place small pictures in things like rings. I do not know what type of metal the ring is made out of maybe pewter? I am hoping these pictures will do if you need me to take pictures a different way to help I.D please let me know. Thanks
Jeff K

Re: Picture ring?

Hey Jeff, Good find. Picture rings were popular during the Civil War. Tony

Re: Picture ring?

Looks like it may possibly be polished tortoise shell , very popular for the period.

I do NOT see a picture in yours, but the technology exists, and if you see one then good enough for me. I do see what looks like the possible edges of one.

Re: Picture ring?

i have a small locket that looks like one of those things people would place a mustard seed inside...thick plastic(?) perhaps...magnifys the object...late 1800's...i finally got around to opening it..and inside was a tiny tintype of a couple...

it is possible there is a photo inside...
it needs to be dismantled to examine it close...someone posted a tintype on here that had been restored...i can't find the thread.

I don't think I would destroy it to find out unless it's a completely junk ring... kinda like - yours.

I don't know... I'll leave that up to you. :)
