I finally found the old mine from the late 1800's and took some close up pics of the exposed vein on the side of an outcropping.

Only had about 20 minutes to spend there on Thanksgiving then the snow came the next day.
The whole area is covered with tailings and am hoping to get an MD up there next summer to detect all that beautiful
quartz.

makton,
That sure is a lot of quartz! Good success this coming summer!.....63bkpkr

Lots of good mineral staining in that quartz. It looks like the heavies were accumulating when things were very hot long, long ago. It's a likely place for checking things out with your detector--good luck!

All the best,

Lanny

I have found some quartz that looked just like that that was au bearing, and the best gold in mine was in the red part of the quartz. My md 20 wouldnt sound off on the quartz and after crushing and panning i think it was because the gold was all sub 100 mesh.

I should have taken more pics but just got close ups of the vein running underground.
The funny part is the actual mine was about 15 feet to the left of this vein and was fenced off and backfilled with quartz tailings.

SO you think I should focus on gathering quartz with the red/iron staining?

Here are a few of the pieces I brought home.
