Ok, I got to take my new E-trac out this afternoon for about an hour to an old turn of the century to mid 20s picnic ground. My buddy Arkie and I have made some good finds there over the years. Several years ago when we found out about this place all I had was my old Whites 6000/di pro and he had a basic Garretts. We found a bunch of Mercs, Wheaties, and Buffalos. They were all 4-7 inches deep. After a couple of years we both upgraded to DFXs. We hunted the area hard again. Started finding teens and twenties mercs and wheaties with an occasional buffalo or v nickel. All about the same depths as before. Well through time we started getting less and less targets and eventually started hunting other places. Money crunches hit us both and we both ended up selling our DFXs. I haven't MDed for about two years and got turned on to the E-trac, which I ended up purchasing about 3-4 weeks ago. Had it out several times just learning and tweaking at other sites with great success. So anyhow, back to the picnic grounds. I always had a hunch that there was stuff there deeper and older than what we had been finding. Fired up right in an area I and Arkie have hunted hard. Took two steps...beeep. Good signal 8-10 inches. Dig it up and its two wheaties together both 1911. Fill the hole, stand up, sweep, and....tweeet. Good signal 8-10 inches. Dig it and its a 1912-D barber dime!!!!! Yes! I check my hole before I stand up and tweeet. About a foot from the hole I just dug. Dig down a good 8-10 inches again and its another barber, this time a 1905!! Filled that hole, stood up, swept another pass or two, and beeep. In the nickel range. Dig down again 8 inches or better and its a 1905 v nickel! By this time it was getting dark and hard to see, so as much as I didn't want to, I turned the E-trac off and headed to the truck. All of these finds came from and area no bigger that 8ft by 8ft. The picnic ground area is prolly and acre or better, so my gosh, its gonna be like virgin ground again with the new E-trac. BTW, my pops was using my 6000/di pro there this evening to and after I got my first signal he came over to where I was and tried to see if it would hit on the targets before I dug...nope, barely would even in all metal mode. Can't wait to get out there for a full day!!!

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Great finds, I cant wait to get back to some of the parks I havent been to in awhile with my new E trac. I had the Explorer XS before the upgrade and did very well with it. Cant wait to see what 6+ years of R&D that has gone into the new machine will do for me in these parks. Glad to see you are finding some goodies.

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Thanks guys. I am in absolute shock at the depth i was having to dig. It takes a while to dig a 10" deep hole and locate the target. The pinpointing was spot on at that depth too. This is one of them sites that MDers dream about, almost zero trash new or old, and mostly good targets....well actually everything has been good. I want to go right now........in the dark!!

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Sweet hunt. I still haven't found a Barber dime yet. Congrats

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Oh man those are beauties ;D How many times we sat around talking there must be more good and DEEPER targets in that place! That's got me stoked. Can't wait to see what the Excalibur II does there

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Its amazing what the E-trac can do! :) Nice job on the old silver! :)

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Nice finds and great story!

It sounds like you're gonna be busy there for a long long time. Are you using pre-sets or do you already have a custom program for it?

I keep thinking about buying an ETrac but every time I look at the old bank account I have to push it out of my mind, but your story has pushed me right up to the edge. Now I'm thinking about what stuff I can sell to scrape up some cash. ::)

Have fun with it!

I actually started with the preset coin program. I run 4 tones, recovery fast, and for this site I put the sensitivity on auto+3. I changed the pattern just a bit to include the upper right and I trimed a little off of the iron masking at the bottom. But basically it is a preset with these minor changes.

Boy I don't know thats your call. I do know that me and Arkie both had DFXs all over this place. Now I'm not saying that I was an expert with the DFX, but with the E-trac everything just comes so natural. Its easy to get back to square one if you take something a little to far. As far as useability right out of the box, AND THE DEPTH THIS THING REACHES, E-trac is the better machine in my book. Can't say about the SE though.

New machine finds Old coins.....great blurb. I wonder what the next good upgraded machine will be finding? :icon_sunny: :icon_scratch: ::)
Keep swinging that machine-thingy.

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Nice finds. Always exciting to find silver, but even more exciting when it is a barber, especially 2 of them.

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

My first Detector was the 6000Di Pro, a beast in the 80's, but a great relic now!! Congrats on the sweet silver!!

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Super job on the Barbers 72'. Sounds like you just scratched the surface of that place. Can't wait to see what else comes up.
Love the new avatar too.

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Thanks everyone. We will definately have plenty to do at the picnic grounds for a while. I will keep everybody posted on any new finds. We haven't found anything bigger than a dime yet, but there is bound to be bigger denominations there. HH

Re: Picnic Grounds...SILVER!

Great finds. To continued luck at the "Barber shop". :occasion14:
