I did a little trading of some magazines I had for this tray of nice Ft Ancient artifacts all from the Portsmouth, Ohio area. There are 42 pieces on there and some very nice examples of typical FA artifacts from my area. There are 8 Drilled Teeth and 4 of those are nice big Bears Teeth. A nice Discoidal with a circle engraved on one side. Some very nice Bone Awls and a super nice Bone Hair Pin. The 3 Shell pieces are really nice too. The Pendant on the left is very well polished and well made. The Shell on the right is a natural shell with a hole drilled and was probably a Dangle and the engraved piece in the center is a very nice piece even broken. There is also a nice big Conch or Whelk Shell Bead just to the left of the Shell Pendant and above the Discoidal.

Thanks choo. I think both of us came out alright on the trade. He got a great collection of old ASO magazines and I got this tray and a little cash to boot. I lnow I was really happy with the deal and I hope he was too. What I really liked about the pieces in a lot of them are from a site I stll hunt.

Thanks Molly. My "man cave" is getting a little full. I guess I'm going to have to expand the cave a little. lol

The piece you are asking about is a small shell of some kind. I'm not sure if it's a freshwater or sea shell, but I have found a few others like it on our Ft Ancient sites we hunt. I only have one other one that has been drilled for suspension though and it came from a site about 35 miles from this one.

Steve
It's a fresh water snail. Our midens are full of them. Rare is a drilled one though. I would have loved to haver seen the design on the discodal. Looks like you came away with some very nice items. Hope you can get the glue to release on that bone.
Nice trade!!

Sounds like a good trade to me...real nice frame of FA artifacts Steve. What was your impression of the AACA show? I'm going to have to get up there soon.

Steve,

Glad you like the frame!!!!!!!!! I thought the show was better this year. Hopefully, they can build it up, and make it great.
I have been pouring through the Ohio Archs all weekend. I am down to 2 issues to complete the entire set 1951-Present.
Here is an example of why I put so much stock in reference material, and why I coveted your Ohio Arch's. I was looking through 1956 #3, Page 100, when I noticed a blade that I thought looked very familiar. A quick trip upstairs, and I knew it was a perfect match. Only change is someone took off the white writing in the picture, and re-wrote in their ink. It is my favorite blade I own, and could be a fun topic all by itself, but now I know the finders name, and when he found it. Thats why I was willing to trade and pay for the magazines.
I also found several articles on the Schisler site in the magazine. Interesting thing is they were written right about the time your new frame was found. Did you see those? Do you want me to make copies for you?
Hope to see you at Manchester?
Regards,
Jon Dickinson

Great post-----Love those bone tools -----AWESOME GRIZZLY TEETH AS WELL

Pointldr-I agree -A great reference library is essential.----Cool locating that blade!

Jon, glad to hear you really like the magazines and they are proving useful to you. I did notice the articles on the Schisler Site in a few of the early issues. There are also quite a few articles on other sites in my area incuding Feurt, Hardin, and Goldcamp. If you'd like to make copies of any of those that would great. Thanks again for the trade. I believe we both came away very happy with what we got.

Thanks for that info on the shell. I kind of figured it was a freshwater snail shell, but I wasn't sure. I did manage to get all of the velcro pads and the glue off after soaking them in water for about a half hour. It was still a pain to get it off, but it did come off and they are now all in a wooden tray.

Ryan, actually the show wasn't as bad as I had thought it was going to be. There was a lot of foot traffic almost the entire day, but I think a lot of that was due to the fact that there at least 2 other conventions/mettings going on in the same motel. I know there were Ventriloquists there because some of them walked through with there dummies. There were a lot of things for sale but it was either really cheap field grade points or really expensive high dollar pieces. I didn't see a lot of middle of the road pieces. Very few Ft Ancient pieces for sale. I had a little cash after my trade and was looking for something Ft Ancient to buy and I didn't see anything I would have bought. The biggest complaint I had was the lack of any place to get something to eat or drink other than the motel diner which was a little pricey. I will say this, the people running the show were very friendly and very helpful. They had someone help me unload my pieces that morning and another person help me load up when I left which I thought was really cool. I plan on trying me best to make it back next year.

Sounds good, appreciate the review. Next year count me in, I'm going to hit a few shows next year.

Some more news on these pieces.

I made a few phone calls and tracked down Mr Tindall who is now living in Ft Myers Florida and he confirmed that he had found these pieces on 2 seperate hunts in 1960. He remembered the board very well and said that there were a few other boards similar to this one that he sold to someone before he moved so maybe I can track them down too.

Thanks.
