Hi there,

Need some help from membership- Found this yesterday in a forest preserve in Illinois that was formerly farmland. I'm guessing it is some sort of axe head or a plow? All feedback welcome. It's fairly heavy. Thank you in advance.

Looks like some kind of pick axe head to me.

Is the hole tapered? That would mostly determine if it was attached to a wooden handle or not.

No, the hole isn't tapered. Here's another view more from the top.

While not having a tapered or oblong hole doesn't 100 percent mean it was not fixed to a handle, I would lean more towards it being from a piece of machinery or something like that

Measurements would help, like a actual tape measurement.
Yes I can see the quarter, but a coin reference is good enough for a similar sized item.
I have an idea, but will wait until you get back on with length & thickness/ width.
Thanks.

How about an old log dog? Would be two of these connected by a chain. Does the fat end appear to have been hammered on at all?
Edit: Look up antique Maine log dog, makes sense for location found if one end of it looks like it's been struck by a hammer/axe

Looks more like the head of a mattock.
Can you turn it sideways so we can see the cross section without the hole?

Here are measurements- Approximately 10.25" X 2.25" X 2" (thickest side).

I don't see any hammer marks... but it is pretty rusted.

Upon relooking at these new photos... i am thinking it is some form of wedge ... probably lost at its new state.
