Before the widespread use of electricity, esp in the country, these large batteries were used to power radios in homes..

Its a cool link Jim and I will save it. I didnt see any mention of Philco. I havent searched but couldnt it be possible that Philco manufactured a large battery to be used specifically to power radios?

I remember researching this in the past but I dont know if I saved much from it. Here is a artist sketch of a USL battery used specifically for radios.

Here is some more info on a similar find. http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/94039-id-please-piece-lead.html

Since AC-operated sets did not become common until the late 1920s, a radio during the early 1920s required a 6-volt, automobile-type, storage battery to light the tube filaments. Every several weeks, the battery was taken to the radio shop or garage to be recharged.

If I could remember just half of the stuff I used to know, I might be considered smart lol.

Notice the artist rendition of a large battery being used to power a radio. I notice its sold by Auto Electric Service Co so I am guessing that they could be used for autos as well.

Heres a ton of ads for Philco batteries being used on automobiles. PHILCO Battery | eBay

So I guess its most likely a car battery. Good ID.

I'm on mobile therefore I can't mark it solved. I will as soon as ii get access to my computer. I'm on vacation.

In the past, I was able to mark posts as solved but the feature is now missing on my end.

Hi Big Cy! Thanks for the ID back-up... I have not logged back on since I posted so I missed your information about the radio batteries... I had no idea! I see you're still here helping out - it's nice to see the "old names" now and again.

Best regards!
