Looks like an early Marines button. If there's any sign of a backmark probably 1790s or so. If no mark maybe as early as 1780s. Too bad there's so much missing. (I know the feeling very well)

Thank you IP. No backmark that I can see, but theres not alot left to go by. Wish it was in better shape but I will take it. :thumbsup:

I have one in my case that looks pretty close... pewter button with an anchor and a lot of edge loss. The history is still the same regardless of condition so still a keeper!

I dont dig alot of military items so I am happy when I do. This is my oldest yet, and its already in the case. :thumbsup:

Buttons like that, especially in iron, might not give much of a signal, so some people could pass them up. When I dig broken pewters, very small flat buttons, and some little brass tacks, it makes me feel pretty confident I'm not leaving much behind that's possible to get with a detector.
