Petroleum based products and metal detectors

I am wondering why my MineLab safari manual states "– Never allow the detector to come into contact with gasoline or other petroleum based liquids."

After cleaning the grit out of the shaft with a little soap and water, I was struggling to get the coil wire back through the shaft, I thought to lubricate the inside of the shaft with a little WD40, but then read the manual.

Do petroleum based liquids have some trace metals in them?
Does petroleum damage the plastic casing on coil or wire?

I am guessing here, but petroleum products would dissolve the plastic.

Petroleum based products will damage the polymers used for cable insulation and jacketing, it will result in cable failure over time, the insulation will start pealing off. Use vegetable based products on cables. Vegetable based silicone is good for the cables, silicone is a natural UV inhibitor.
