I am searching for petroglyphs in the Sutherland wash archaeological district just north of Tucson. My goal is to locate and interpret simpler petroglyph panels and then follow any trails or geographic descriptions the glyphs may describe. Please message me if you are interested in joining me on these hikes. You should be a fit and experienced hiker with the ability to explore cross-country. Outings will last 4-6 hours depending on the weather, and cover 4-6 miles. The Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 protects all artifacts so nothing may be recovered on these outings. The primary goal will be documenting successful glyph interpretation via photographs, GPS coordinates and mapping. Ed, SaddleBrooke, Az.

What’s the meaning of the one you have pictured?
I’m in Georgia and have the same swirl on pottery I’ve found. It’s amazing how far knowledge can travel

Coonhound: Thanks for the photo. The glyphs may be showing these concepts: dark, crossing, in front of, far away. I'm not sure what the lower right figure is. Likely a prone human figure showing barring, stopping or in front of. Prone suggests perhaps sleeping or night. All of this is purely conjecture.

My photo does not show the entire panel, and I need a better photo of it to discern the details. It appears to recommend taking an ascending route on a particular azimuth, in a wash, with a shortcut on the first section where tracks are not left (bedrock). The route/trail continues further. It looks like the endpoint may be an enclosed place. Additional photos are needed to see if more can be figured out.

Russau: My photograph was un-chalked and as-is. I can't speak about Coonhound's photo. I know that some petroglyphs are chalked by viewers. I think any contact with the petroglyphs can potentially damage them. Photographs in the correct light will show most details. Some glyphs are so ancient they cannot be fully discerned. The attached is an example that is hard to see. It probably has glyphs placed at two different times since one set is dim and others are brighter.

Cool. I think that first one you got is a trail map and it means to go up from there. Not knowing the country, that might not be right, just a guess.
