Petrified is totally stonelike, very heavy, yours still looks like wood to me what does it feel like weightwise?

Looks like a piece of wood to me ... at any rate, it's older than Moses!

Superb find and thanks for sharing.

That is rotten wood, petrified wood is solid stone.

This is "definitely" stone, not wood. There's even a small piece of what looks like quartz that I couldn't get a clear picture of and it has the weight of stone.

All of your comments have helped confirm what I felt might be tru. Thanks so much.

Try to find a lapidary (old rock hound) person in your area. They can confirm immediately. If it is petrified wood, they can slice it up for you. Makes great jewelry, suncatchers to hang in a window, etc. It is pretty valuable sliced and ready to use. Look on Ebay to see if they have any comparables.

Holy schmolly BioProfessor!

I have some petrified wood and now I want to go cut it up! That is freaking cool!!

Mine will probebly be gray with dead insects stuck inside of it... :P That'll look great in a window.

Is that a common piece of petrified wood Daryl?

There is a lot of petrified wood out there. They even sell trunks to make tables out of. Some has color. Some has good definition to the rings. Some has other minerals in it. To some degree, you get what you pay for. I tend to like the colored specimens. I've seen some mineralized specimens that had opalized areas. Knock your eyes out. Got a couple of extra grand lying around? Here are a couple of specimens for a few hundred dollars. Chances of your slices looking like this are small unless it came form one of the places in the world that produce this kind of color.

I have a couple of small tables made from ancient Heart Kauri
Mother Nature truly is the original artist

Daryl - we're not related are we? Nup, you have more hair
Cheers, Mike

Hi Daryl, Kia Ora, "more hair on you" means, I'm thinning on top, NOT that we're of different stock.
Cheers, Mike

Daryl, that last photo of yours looks like a piece of petrified wood from around the area of the Petrified Forest of Arizona. Is it? I've got several pieces of petrified wood, and a small black opal from Virgin Valley Nevada with fire in it. (Now that's what I call purdy!) Anyhow, I've seen some wood that is so perfectly replicated by mineralization that you'd swear it was still real wood - but it's petrified! I guess that's what wesfrye53 has.

Hi Mike,

At our age, the hair either turns grey or turns loose. Looks like we're one of each.

Yup, petrified wood. I find a lot of it in the creek near my home. Some pieces have amazing detail and beautiful earth tones.

What's interesting to me about the piece of petrified wood that wesfrye53 found is that it appears to have rotted for quite awhile before it became petrified. Around here, the wood was covered by volcanic ash and therefore was protected from oxygen (and bacteria and/or insects) so that it couldn't rot before it transformed into stone.

I have to admit that I am thouroughly enjoying this site. I've found out not only answers to my questions but also much more interesting information; geneology based on hair, stone polishing, geology (which I really enjoyed in college), slicing rocks to make money, and on and on.

Please don't take offense because in all seriousness I am enjoying all the comments and find them interesting. Glad I was introduced to this group.

OK...what have I gotten into. Just read a post that led to erotic handcuffs and miniature harmonica's Who are you guys? As I said, what a site!

First off, I'm not a guy - although I pretended to be one for 7 months. LOL. This place is a hoot, keep on postin'.

Dang... I missed another erotic post? They don't come by here too often...

OOps... I was involved in that post, I just saw it again. never mind. :P

And now a person who's not a guy but pretended to be one...there must be an interesting story behind that one. This place can become addictive!
