Looks like petrified wood to me; although it has weathered strange which likely means it was partially decomposed before petrification. Some of the strangest petrified wood I have seen.

That's what is throwing me off. Looks like wood...but not like any petrified wood I've seen. Not sure if it is something else that just wore that way (I haven't seen it in person yet - it's on its way to me).

Well, IMO, it is either a petrified log or limestone. I'm thinking the latter. A hardness test would be easy to differentiate.

Unsure, very interesting, it does resemble partially decomposed wood where the material between the rings decompose faster being less dense.
