This strange "rock" came out of a wall made of petrified wood/crystals/minerals etc. that is in my yard, made by the previous owners probably in the 1930's. They were avid collectors and obviously spent a lot of time constructing this wall. Over time the cement is crumbling and releasing these rocks. This item measures about 6 inches across at the front, about 5 1/2 inches tall and 6 inches in depth. It weighs about 3 lbs 4 oz. It almost looks like what a heart would look like, with different chambers. Any idea of what it is? I have been unable to locate anything similar online. Thank you for your help.

Posting rocks in the What-Is-It? forum tends to get you mostly joke replies. I suggest you post your unidentified rock over in TreasureNet's "Rocks/Gems" forum, where the rock-hounds and Mineralogists hang out. Here's a link to it:

Welcome. It sure looks like petrified wood to me, it's a beautiful piece. It is definitely made of quartz, silicon material. Again, beautiful.

Silica, this rock has a lot of properties/appearance of chert, the crystals are quite common in chert nodules (most likely those are a type of quartz). Where did you find it, State and Region?(that info helps in identification based on the geology).

Edit: I see you found them in a stone wall in your yard from the previous owners, and like Smokey said it looks like pet. wood, I'm leaning that way too over flint/chert.

It has some characteristics of bloodstone, some of the outer crust.
