Yeah but its not crumbly like coal. Doesn't leave any mark on hands or paper. And doesn't break easily. Feels like a stone. I pried couple flakes off and they were sharp like shards of glass.

Its difficult to see in the pics I took but it has wood-like grain that runs length of it, but probably is anthracite coal afterall. Btw can you recommend any books or other resources on coal identification? Thanks again for your help guys! :occasion14:

There are many types of coal, some are hard, some soft. Coal can form in various formations, I have a lot of coal in my backyard from when there was my house took coal, and some of it looks like that, it usually is very flaky too. Also, Last time I was at a beach I found coal just like that, strange coincidence.

Thanks for the info coinman123! Not as strange a coincidence as you'd think! I've been researching coal finds by md's all day and seems we're not the only two finding it on beaches!!! Who knew!!! :dontknow: Btw is there even such a thing as petrified burnt wood??? images.jpg
