Nice. Interesting story about mortar and pestles. Around 1900, a
anthropologists/archaeologist published a paper on one of our local tribes. He interviews many elders. Across the board, they all said that their people NEVER used mortar/pestles.
They said that these were items left behind by the people that were there before them.
They said these were evil items that would sink into the ground, travel, then reappear in other places. It was bad luck to look at or touch one. They said sometimes someone would use a mortar/pestle to make bad medicine against someone they didn’t like.
This is interesting because many stone mortar/pestles have been found buried at camps within their tribal area. They appeared to be part of their daily food prep kit.
Looks like some high quality pestles. So do you believe the Bell style pestles were only up north? I have one Hoof pestle and the rest are grinder types which are rather crude. I haven’t seen any Bell styles found in my area
