Perpetual calendar--what do the letters "AOIE" stand for?

I bought this little perpetual calendar at an estate sale, but can't figure out what the letters "AOIE" stand for(Ancient Order of Independent ?) I looked on www.exonumia.com and it wasn't listed and even typed it in to google but nothing came up. The calendar was made for the Phillips Chemical Co.(Phillips66) and says "A Date with the PHILBLACKS" 1958-1985 Anderson & Sons, Inc., Westfield, Mass.
And what were the "PHILBLACKS"?
Thanks for any help!

Just a guess but the first two letters match up with place ie Akron Ohio.

Philblack is a chemical element.

You're along my line of thought.... being on that side it probably has to do with the company, not calendar

I was locked in on "Ancient Order" for some reason ::) . And this was from the 1950's so the "American Order of ??" makes more sense........or since it has to do with Phillips Petroleum maybe the "A" stands for Automotive ?

Id stick with Chemicals , Philback is a chemical element which Phillips produced.Oddly though AOIE is not a recoqnised acronym or abbrieviation that i can find.

A could mean any number of things , Associated is another contender , as in Associated order , its probably not "order" i cant help thinking.

Association of Independent ?

Association of International ?

Could the "I" be for Institute?

You are in the ballpark , the E is almost certainly for Engineers.
The little character is odd , what exactly is it ? I can see its taken human form in that it has arms legs and a face , but looking beyond that , what in your opinion does it represent ?

Re: Perpetual calendar--what do the letters "AOIE" stand for?

Carbon black is the finely powdered carbon that makes black rubber (like tires) black. Philblack is the Phillips Chemical trademark for the range of carbon blacks they produce. A, O, I and E are members of that range differing in their particle size and surface area. Google "Philblack A" or "Philblack O" for more about carbon black than you ever wanted to know. I think the little stick figure is just an attempt to put a human face on an otherwise yuckky chemical.

That explains why theres no acronym or abbreiviation AOIE.

Re: Perpetual calendar--what do the letters "AOIE" stand for?

The carbon blacks were manufactured by Phillips. Chemical Co., under the trade name Philblack A, E. I, and. O.
So I think A,E,I and O are different types of carbon black.

I see now chip already figured it out.

It is an African American (black man) figure, kinda racist looking, with big lips(sorry I don't want to offend anyone with this!)--and next to the man it says: A Date with the Philblacks.

Re: Perpetual calendar--what do the letters "AOIE" stand for?

Its an intersting item for sure.Im thinking the very thing that makes it shall we say politically incorrect (un-pc) is the very thing that would make it a very collectable item.
For example there was a Jam company that had a similar logo which was ordered to be removed after decades of household use.The trademark giveaways are now worth considerable amounts to collectors.
