Permission to dig with a price.

Some of the metal detecting clubs in my area did this for a church, which was located on property dating back to a slave plantation. The property had been deeded to the church, provided that they continue holding services there and would revert back to an estate if services stopped. Well someone torched the church and the members unable to rebuild the church, continue to this day holding services on the property. Several metal detecting clubs made a donation to the church and were given permission to hunt the property. Nothing too great was found but the Church members appreciated the support and a local news station reported the event. We did it mostly as a community service event and to promote and support the hobby.

That was a commendable thing to do but it was a donation. I'm talking about being charged for hunting .

I've paid $100.00 to hunt thousands of Acres of property for a year

Since the area is too large to copy a pic of all the potential land I had, this is about a 5th of it

Obvious problems not enough days in a year,
and once spring is in full swing, ghost towns, & even the abandoned house yards
are jungles

& have also made a sizable Donation to hunt a swimming pool,
and plan on doing it again for more

$100 for an all you can swing buffet! Not a bad price but where you able to bring friends along? Did the owner charge you that price or did you offer it?

Bump. Has anyone else paid or most owners don't ask for anything?

everyone who wants to, needs to purchase their own Permit. Nobody is allowed on the land without one.

Allot of it is Stripped coal lands , But there is also allot of area where people
live in the houses on their land, & some that are sitting abandond because the
home owners (Leased from the land owners) died.

Like these 1800 House

Not many 1800 homes still stand here. What was the oldest coin or relic you found on this land?

I've been doing research on the city I live in to try to find old parks or homes . Most of my detecting has been on my property trying to learn the differences in tones my detector gives.

no date large cent on the bottom one

I've never seen a large cent in person but its definitely on my list to find. Did you offer the owner the $100 or is that the amount he came up with?

in this case the Landowner is a Big time landowner who got tired of People Trespassing for all types of uses from
riding 4 Wheelers to Hunting to Fossil hunting Etc. & worrying about getting sued,
& in order to have control back they drew up the Permit System.
All those with Permit can use it for anything Except "Fossil Hunting"
they are against this, because Fossil hunters sell their Fossils on EBay
and name the locations to find them.

anyway as long as we sign the waver & pay $100.00 we can Treasure Hunt the properties.
IF We catch a trespasser & they are arrested we get a Free Permit for the following year,
so it's like they have Eyes everywhere.

Of course My last permit was 2007, Haven't tried since, so no idea if prices increased

We have done several hunts where we paid a property owner a group hunt fee to hunt his property for a day. We have done them for anywhere from $5-20 a person. In some cases we gave 80% to the landowner and the other 20% went for hunt prizes. We had 40-50 people on some of these hunts , so the landowner made $200-$500 to open his gate for the day. Waivers are signed and everyone got to keep their finds.

With all that land I can imagine it would be hard to manage. Have you asked someone with a nice manicured yard if you can hunt? Do you offer money? I want an idea of how to go about asking for permission to dig.

That sounds like a fun thing to do especially if you're new to the hobby and want some experience hunting with people that have been doing it for years. There's not much open land around here where you can ask the owner to hunt many acres. 1 or 2 acres is about as big as it gets here.

No I,m not a big fan of asking home owners to hunt their lawns.
Unless I already know them personally

I don't think ill be asking properties with nice lawns. There's a community of ranches that's been there since the early 1900's that I've been thinking of asking. They have their lawns but have about 1/2 to 3/4 of an acre of dirt that I would love to hunt.
I remember seeing a video on YouTube where a man says he drives around and looks for old homes. He says he has a technique he uses to get permission to hunt these old homes. He has a website where he explained how he does it but I didn't think much of it because I was looking for info on metal detectors at the time. Now I can't find that video and decided to ask here but doesn't look like too many people go to the techniques section .

Yea for some reason General discussion gets more traffic.

I just click ACTIVE TOPICS Above & read all as they appear

Jeff I just sent you a PM.

The Civil War hunts (DIV etc.) that are put on every year do this on a regular basis. The farmers make out pretty darn good.

I read somewhere about a club that does something like that here in California. Might have to do more research and see what they are all about ..
