Hi all, I am very new to this and am trying to learn/follow etiquette. I found a sweet looking, overgrown old homesite I'd like to check out. There is no signage (i.e. private property, no trespassing, etc.) and I haven't seen anyone coming or going since I started watching a few days ago. It seems completely abandoned to me. Any advice would be appreciated.

Check the county records or knock on doors near by. Our if see a farmer out in field stop and ask. Never know till you ask.

Check to see if your county website has a GIS tool for tax/property records. If they do, it will tell you exactly who pays taxes on that property.

YES good advice grasshopper , I Agree , it's the right way to go about getting permission , respect for others property is the only way to go . If turned down , say Thanks , at least you made the effort , if granted permission you don't have to look over your shoulder and feel nervous .... relaxation is a big part of the hobby and there is nothing relaxing about dealing with an irate landqwner . Good Luck

Hi, quick question.....what's a GIS tool...in other words, what does "GIS" stand for? Thanks.

GIS stands for geographic information systems. Its a mapping tool used for a variety of purposes. Some counties have an interactive GIS that has clickable properties to see who owns it.

Go to your town hall and ask for the maps, I recently brought in a google map of where I wanted to go and shoed the guy and he pulled out a map showing property lines. Call your town hall and see what hey can do.

Mine did. I just googled GIS and my county and a couple links came up. Good info!

Our parish(county) tax assessor website has the GIS mapping, but it will only display the assessed value, transactions, etc of a chosen property...no names are given. Just the "Property Mailing Address". I guess I would have to go to the courthouse to see the actual records with the owner's name.

I know some relic hunters will go on places like that w/out asking (not saying you would), but I would never do it, even if the owner is out of state and unreachable. Just my 2 cents worth. Hope you find out and get the ok!

I would ask the closest neighbor that I could find if they know who owns that property. Somebody around there will know who it belongs to. Tennessee digger

sometimes there is no owner..no heirs...or sometimes property taxes aren't paid and its owned by the town (in that case.....have at it...)
