Could be something from a Perkins Diesel engine? Maybe a crankcase breather cap, minus the brass wool inside?

In what area of the country was this found?

Don't know about Perkins machinery but this reminded me of the end of a florescent bulb were the two prongs would stick out.

Oh, it was found in southern Ohio.

Reanm8er, finally got a chance to research Perkins Diesel, which made me think of a starter solenoid, and then an electric switch. A match was made, namely a brass push button switch manufactured by the Perkins Electric Switch Manufacturing Company. Click here for photos of a complete switch. Thanks for all your help!
