Penny with an arrow stamped on it - It's a spinner token!

Any significance to having an arrow stamped on both sides of this 1914 wheat penny? Or just someone having random fun? :D

Thanks!

Re: Penny with an arrow stamped on it

I've seen old coins with arrows on them. They were used as gaming devices in bars years ago. The player would spin the coin and whoever the arrow pointed to when the coin stopped spinning had to buy the round.

Maybe someone fashioned this penny for a similar purpose?

It is not raised - it is stamped into the coin.

Ah .. interesting idea!

Re: Penny with an arrow stamped on it

Rather than spinning the penny flat, which would require that the side facing down have a small bead on which it could spin, this penny was spun upright, on edge. That way, when it landed, it wouldn't matter what side faced up because an arrow on either side would point to the guy who'd be buying the next round.

Bramble, very COOL find! The vintage arrow saloon/bar tokens are called spinner tokens. Your is the first 'mammy made' spinner token I've ever seen made from a U.S. coin. Did you find it near an old pub or store? Breezie

Great info Marble and Breezie! Thank you ;D

Breezie - I found it in my sister's front yard. She will sure get a kick out of it :D Her house is a little old farmhouse. The area is still pretty rural but in the early 1900s there was a schoolhouse just down the road. Maybe a student lost it on the way?

I'll think about it some more :icon_scratch: Gotta love it though!
