I just got handed this worn old 'penny' by a grocery store cashier, and haven't been able to identify it.
One side has a palm-like tree. The other has what looks like a shield (bird?) surrounded by laurels, possibly with banners both above and below.
The shield side looks somewhat like an old US two-cent piece, except looks more like a banner where the date should be. An image search for trees on copper coins finds a few merchant tokens, but not this one.
