So I am halveless this weekend and bought a bunch of stuff to hold me over, 4 boxes of pennies, 2 boxes of dimes, and 2 boxes of quarters.

Anyoldways, why do we do pennies again? Im not really interested in hoarding copper but I did separate out all the wheats. I was really hoping for an Indian head or two. Are these wheats really worth anything (as in, not what the red book says, but in the real world), or is this a waste of time if I am not culling copper? The boxes seem to spit out 12-20 wheats each. I found one 1955 that looks like the 55s were stamped twice, thought that was weird.

Just kidding on the 55 :laughing7: :laughing7:

I have seen rolls of wheats from 1940-1958 go for around 6-7 dollars, 1909-1939 for $15-$20, both circulated condition. So hoarding wheat cents is definitely not a waste of time. Obviously hoarding copper is not a waste of time either. But its no piece of silver...

You should've said that a 69-S cent you found looked really blurry. LOL

Tanner and I do this as a hobby, We want to try and collect them all. If we were searching cents for return on our investment it would be a poor investment of time. I was searching nickels once and a friend of mine asked "Why not just go up to the coin shop and by what you need." It would not be as FUN. My son Tanner and I have searched over 100 boxes of cents and have found 2 Indian Heads. The coin shop I visit has a whole bowl full for a buck a piece. Finding them in the wild is a lot more fun!!

We do save wheats and perhaps will sell off our doubles when we get enough rolls, We search halves as well There is potential for profit with these but it is not a get rich quick scheme. We view this as a hobby. Kind of like metal detecting There is always the potential of a great find but the thrill is in the search.

Keep on Searching
Dad and Tanner

PS in 2012 we have searched 4 boxes of halves and abuot $500 in customer rolled halves and have scored 2 40%. It is still out there, some times you are just have to get lucky.

Indian Head Cents are certainly possible as I've got a handful from CRHing in boxes and bags. The problem is, the quality is absolutely dreadful, 3 of my pieces look like they were scraped down to the bare copper with steel wool, 1 is so worn you can't hardly make out the date until you tilt it into the light. And another has a decent grade but has a hole drilled into it.

If you don't really want to save for the little profit you have with wheats but want some Indian head cents, just buy some nicer grade ones for $5 each. The ones you find CRHing are going to be of terrible quality.
