Do you think I should detach the rusted metal pieces? I feel if I did I'd still keep those to keep with the sharpener or should I just trash them if I did remove them. I have a hard time trashing somethings. It's like I gave it light in, lets say, 70 years, and then abruptly return it to the bowels of oblivion.

Nope.. I would treat them with a rust converter and leave them attached.
 

Tyvm. I will look that up. As for conservation tips, do you have any other for the piece itself. So far, most of my finds get a dawn and warm water tooth brushing and then put in a baggy. I have heard of sealants and that but I don't want to make a wrong decision or seal it too early before it could be cleaned proper.
