Pegleg's Gold is still safe!

I took a long drive today out to Borrego Springs and the Salton Sea to look around. There are "3 hills" everywhere, and I MD'd a couple just fot the hellof. In a stream bed (arroyo) tha probably hasn't seen water in 10 years I found............a poptop. Thought for sure I had a black nugget. Anyway, here are some pics of the Anza-Borrego area for all those snowbound.

In 1948, some locals got together about 200 people to search for Pegleg's gold, and before the hunt they were required to place 10 rocks on a "monument" to Pegleg for good luck. Today the pile is about 15 feet at the base and 7 feet high (see pic) below. Enjoy.

Re: Pegleg's Gold is still safe!

Did you forget to put your ten rocks in the mix!? :D

Beautiful pictures Bob!

;)

Re: Pegleg's Gold is still safe!

Every loose rock for a 10 mile radius has disappeared.

Re: Pegleg's Gold is still safe!

That is awesome!! I should start one of those piles here to get rid of all these rocks everywhere ;D

Re: Pegleg's Gold is still safe!

I told the people I ride with a rock a stick and 8 beer cans wasn't going to cut it.
But would they listen? NO!! HH

Re: Pegleg's Gold is still safe!

I bet the gold is under that pile of rocks. ;D

Re: Pegleg's Gold is still safe!

Borrego Springs were a stopping point for DeAnza, a Spanish Conquistador that guided settlers from Mexico to San Francisco and other points ON FOOT. The ist pictures are from 3000 ft looking east and down to the So. Cal desert in which reside the Salton Sea, at -200ft
(appx). The desert floor was under about 150' of water up until the 16th century, and connected to the Sea of Cortez.

A legend re: blue-eyed, blond indians gave rise to a possible Scandinavian visit and a dragon-head ship has been reported buried in the sand. Its quite believable, since the Northern Europeans were looking for a Northern passage to who knows where. The Sea of Cortez was so north reaching that the early Spanish maps showed CA to be an island, and reportedly a Spanish galleon was trapped by receding waters and still lies somewhere under a sand dune, of which there are huge ones all around the southern part of the basin.

You can "Google earth" the area and see the road I took down to Borrego Springs, very zig-zag down the mountain. A great biker route as is most of CA. Very nice this time of year, 70 deg, but 110 to 120 in the summer.

Thanks for the comps.
