Peanut jar questions.

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between actual old peanut jars and repops? I just decided I want to hunt an old one down. Also if I come across an old one, how can I tell how old it is?

If I were to do the research, I'd start by contacting the top brands (Skippy, Smuckers, Planters, Jif and Peter Pan) and ask each of them.

That's a great suggestion, Don, but I think there is a possibility the OP is inquiring about the type of bulk peanut jars you used to see on gas station countertops back in the day - basically primitive peanut vending machines where either you or the clerk would scoop a serving of nuts into a baggie. I could be wrong though. Some clarification may be needed.

Yeah SDIceMan, the bulk peanut jars are the ones I'm talking about. Thanks for helping me clear that up. I don't know if there were repops of those, and if there were, how to tell the difference.

That looks like a great resource, Dig! I found a jar about a month ago at my local GW, and after spending 20 minutes or so scouring the aisles for the lid, I decided to leave the jar. Much like gasmithbd71, I too have concerns about recognizing an original versus a repop, so I appreciate the link.
