This piece is killing me. Found at an late 1800s site occupied until the 70s. This piece is pretty obviously from the early register of the site, judging by the patent date. So... What is it? It appears like it has some machining on the top, the circular part. It is threaded a quarter way down from the top. It appears to have some seams that have been ground down on the main tube thing? The top circle has a slight lip down into the hole. The end of it looks crimped four ways, but not very uniformly. I am not sure if the piece was originally a circle tube, or a square tube. It might have been forced into a square during crimping, but that seems unlikely as the brass is super thick. My original hopeful thoughts were that it was an artillery fuse, discarded. However, it doesnt have threads on the outside. Someone else suggested a copper wire crimp thing, possibly related to telegraphy??? I HAVE NO IDEA??
SoS help us

What size threads? Could be a wire crimp that allowed a lightning rod tip to be screwed into it.
